The Baroque refers to a style of the 18th century during absolutism that develops from Italian Renaissance and Mannerism. The term "baroque", which was first created as a mocking term and labeled with characteristics as "pompous, flamboyant, bombastic" in French, has its origin from the Portuguese term "barucca" and means "irregular pearl". This style spread throughout Europe until the end of the 18th century. It was mainly supported by the clergy and the royal houses and in the Netherlands also by the emerging urban middle class. Thus, the Baroque-style painting in particular unfolded in full in newly built churches, monasteries and absolutist palaces. Large illusorily painted ceiling frescoes are created, the perspective designs of which open new deep spaces. The artists of Baroque are mostly not only masterful painters but also architects and sculptors. As a good example for such a genius, we can name Lorenzo Bernini who created many important sculptures such as the group "Apollo and Daphne" and was appointed architect of the Saint Peter Cathedral in Rome. Here it becomes clear how the Baroque tries to link different materials and arts and to create one great work of art. The painters of the Baroque like to place human emotions in the foreground. Many pathos and great gestures are applied which often remind of theatre scenes. In contrast to this, there are also delicately allegoric al paintings that reveal their true statement only at second glance. This makes it clear how diverse this style is, which likes to apply dualities. You can study, for example, very pompous, life-affirming orgies and contrary to this, Varnitas still-lifes reminding of death. In the Baroque, the still life is added as a new genre and many Dutch artists acquire great mastery in it.
